Inspiring Readers Since 1992
The Creative Education Institute (CEI) is dedicated to effecting change through improved literacy. For over 25 years, the 501(c)(3) has been inspiring individuals of all ages by teaching them how to read using Richards Learning Systems®, or RLS.
The current project of CEI is the Richards Learning Systems® Literacy “Game-Changer” Video Project. The video series is entitled “Sammy and the Magical Reading Chest.” Debuting in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, this video curriculum will teach students how to read and train teachers at the same time.
Below is a collection of videos celebrating the Creative Education Institute and Richards Learning Systems® — including the pilot episode of “Sammy and the Magical Reading Chest”.
Sammy and the Magical Reading Chest
“Sammy and the Magical Reading Chest” is the title of our K-2 Richards Learning Systems® video series. This revolutionary video program will teach students how to read and train teachers at the same time. The entire series will consist of 77 short, episodic videos that will teach students how to read one concept at a time.
The “Sammy and the Magical Reading Chest” series also comes with accompanying student workbooks, teacher resource manuals, and manipulatives. Following each episode, students will be able to practice using the same materials Sammy and her friends used in the video. The resource manual will also provide additional activities for further practice.
Eric Gordon, the CEO of the Cleveland Municipal School District, has already committed 27 K-2 classrooms to the launch of this program. With financial support, we can bring Sammy and her friends to a school district near you!

Partnership with the Cleveland Schools
For decades, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s (CMSD) reading test scores have not risen. CMSD has had twelve superintendents in the last twenty years. Today Mr. Eric Gordon, CMSD CEO and newly elected “Urban Educator of the Year”, is passionately committed to helping the children of Cleveland learn to read. The Creative Education Institute has partnered with Eric Gordon and CMSD to change the way children read and teachers learn to teach reading. The solution — Richards Learning Systems®.
Initially, 27 K-2 classrooms will participate in the project. A skilled reading researcher will carefully study the efficacy of the teachers’ and students’ success with this innovation approach. Our partnership and methodology will dramatically improve the reading skills for Cleveland children and ultimately beyond to other cities.
