Our Mission: To effect change through improved literacy

Academic Fun & Fitness Camp

June 12 - July 21, 2017

Welcome to Our Camp!

The Academic Fun & Fitness Camp serves the unique needs of children ages 6 – 19 with learning disabilities: ADHD, Asperger’s, dyslexia, LD, PDD-NOS, developmental disabilities, other disabilities, or those who struggle in school.

Children with learning disabilities often become so frustrated by school experiences that they do not realize that learning can be fun.  Our campers have fun while gaining new perspectives on learning academic skills and developing the social skills and self-esteem needed to be successful.

Our special needs summer camp is conveniently located in Kirtland, Ohio, on the campus of Lakeland Community College*.  With a small camper to staff ratio and personalized curriculum, our campers enjoy the best that summer has to offer while learning in an engaging and supportive environment.

Multi-Sensory Learning and Social Skills

At this “un-school” camp, our professionally trained staff use games, multi-sensory techniques, and systematic instruction to improve basic reading and math skills.  Each camper is evaluated to determine their academic needs.  A 5:1 camper to staff ratio ensures every student receives individual attention and support.

Our wide variety of social skills activities let campers explore the world beyond the traditional classroom.  Individual progress will be addressed as campers are encouraged to work together to solve problems using group dynamics.  Campers gain new perspectives on learning while building self-esteem, exercising, and having fun.

Social Skills Activities

Parents Day

Our campers utilize Richards Learning Systems®. This research-based, multi-sensory systematic approach to language arts helps children who struggle with word attack skills, spelling, comprehension (fiction and nonfiction) and writing. Students are grouped based on their age, ability and the specific skills they need to develop.

Real Life Ma+h is a multi-sensory, systematic approach to basic math skills. Utilizing manipulatives and creative activities, math becomes easy and fun. Topics may include place value, math facts, word problems, whole number computations, fractions, decimals, percentages, money, time and/or problem-solving skills. Students are grouped based on their age, ability and the specific skills they need to develop.

Every day our campers participate in three one-hour activities that provide opportunities for creativity and exploration while developing social skills and self-confidence. New activities are added each year to keep camp fun and interesting for returning campers.

Our activities include theater arts, hands-on science, non-competitive sports, music therapy, art therapy, martial arts…and more!

Parents, families, friends and funders are invited to an afternoon presentation led by our campers. Each camper presents an idea tied to the yearly camp theme and receives awards.
